In the Historic Villa de Betancuria, the first capital of the Canary Islands, after the
conquest and deservedly distinguished as one of the most beautiful villages of Spain,
we find the island’s Archaeological Museum.
A modern space that exists with the purpose of the promotion of culture and research,
centre and hub of all knowledge on the island’s first natives: the Mahos.
Through the legacy that the aborigines left at sites such as Tindaya Mountain,
Villaverde Cave, La Atalayita, La Fortaleza, La Pared, etc. and which is collected and
shown in this museum, we can rebuild the Mahos' magical-religious world, their
material culture and their strategies to survive in an arid and hard land for more than
two thousand years.
The Archaeological Museum is the meeting point to get to know us better as a people,
and to keep on providing answers to the secrets that surround the life of the
aboriginal settlers of Fuerteventura.
